The Naval Engineering career trains professionals in the areas of design, production, transportation and maritime administration. After 4 years of study, graduates are qualified to design, build, and repair boats and other floating structures. In addition, they can manage activities related to maritime transport.

Mission
To train professionals of excellence in Naval Engineering, with a wide cultural sensibility, environmental and social ethic, with critical thinking skills and entrepreneurship and management skills to solve problems of their specialty, with aptitudes to do research and spread new knowledge and solve sector problems, individually and as members of interdisciplinary groups.

Core Components of the Program
The ESPOL institutional Learning Results (RA) aim to prepare students for professional activity through the acquisition of skills. This professional preparation in the Naval Engineering career is carried out based on 3 main axes, as we mention below:
1) Vessel Design: includes the study of the shapes and hydrostatics of a vessel, the resistance and estimation of the power of a vessel, including the structural analysis and response in waves and the definition of the machinery and auxiliary systems of a vessel. boat.
2) Construction and Maintenance: includes definition of the details of the structure, and the form and planning of construction, and also reviews the maintenance of a ship.
3) Maritime systems administration: covers maritime and port management, the study of maritime transportation systems, project planning and entrepreneurship development from the perspective of innovation.

International Accreditation
The Naval Engineering program is accredited with the EUR-ACE quality seal, by the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE).

* Undergraduate tuition/fees:
The Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador in its Article 356, among other principles, establishes that third-level public higher education will be tuition/fees free.  Zero cost education is linked to the academic responsibility of the students.

If you want to study Naval Engineering you must be interested in the design and construction of ships, or in the organization of cargo and passenger transport by sea. In addition, you must have skills in the area of mathematics, physics and chemistry, and be willing to use technological tools in engineering.

Educational Objectives

  1. Participated in significant ship projects, managing multidisciplinary teams.
  2. Contributed to the development of technological tools to design vehicles and structures proper for the marine environment.
  3. Developed technical activities demonstrating ethical behavior, and social, economic, and environmental responsibility.
  4. Applied new technologies and knowledge whilst keeping up-to-date with developments in the area of naval engineering.

Student Outcomes

1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex Naval engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
2. An ability to apply Naval engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
3a. An ability to communicate effectively in Spanish with a range of audiences
3b. An ability to communicate effectively in English with a range of audiences
4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in Naval engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use Naval engineering judgment to draw conclusions
7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge in Naval engineering as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
8.To design real solutions of Naval engineering with a unique value proposition to address specific needs considered from the point of view of stakeholders.

After 4 years of study, you will be able to:

• Participate in significant projects for the construction of ships and oceanic structures as part of multidisciplinary teams.
• Collaborate in the development of technological tools to design vehicles and marine structures.
• Develop technical activities with ethics and social, economic and environmental responsibility.
• Constantly update your professional profile to develop new knowledge and technologies.

Occupational Profile

As a Naval Engineer from ESPOL you will be able to work in different areas of the industry: shipyards and dry docks, design offices, ship construction and maintenance companies, port management and maritime service providers. You can hold the following positions:

  • Area Heads
  • Designers
  • Maritime transport planners and organizers
  • Construction and maintenance project managers
  • Marine supervisors or surveyors
  • Completion of curriculum.
  • Degree work (Integrative Subject)
  • Pre-professional practices (240 hours) and bonding (160 hours)
  • Delivery of personal documentation to STA (Academic Technical Secretary)

The Capstone Project is a culminating requirement for graduation. These projects provide students with the experience of applying acquired knowledge and skills to the needs of society, with a focus on sustainability.
The IDEAR Fair showcases all Capstone projects, offering students a valuable opportunity to showcase their work and hone soft skills such as communication and teamwork. It is also a space for students to network with potential clients and future employers.
